The third annual Food for Thought event is a harvest celebration that brings together all of the participants in a sustainable local food system: consumers, producers, retailers and chefs. It's designed to raise awareness for sustainably produced food and encourage Calgarians to make more informed daily choices for greater enjoyment and improved health.
Through the use of a multimedia display and more than 15 sampling stations, we will be showcasing producers and businesses that promote healthy, sustainable food and giving Calgarians an opportunity to discover and savour their products. Imagine meeting the farmer that grew the local, organic tomato alongside the independent chef that prepared the gazpacho you are enjoying. Taste the difference and learn more about these businesses' commitment to sustainability.
The event will also include presentations by sustainable food authors - dee Hobsbawn-Smith, author of Foodshed, and Jennifer Cockrall King, author of Food and the City - book signings and live music. Michelle Giangualano from Bundles of Energy will present the new Whole Foods Lifestyle System. Feast of Fields is in its 23rd year and was the first organic food event in Canada. It was started by a group of chefs and farms (Jamie Kennedy, Michael Stadtlander, David Collemyer, Daniel Gilbert, Joseph Born and others) that became Organic Advocates. They wanted to create an event that would bring the organic lifestyle to the public. It has grown substantially over the years, as more chefs, farmers and artisans move in the organic direction. Wineries, breweries and artisans have also been a big part of this event.
Feast is always held at an organic farm or TRCA park, where guests stroll amongst the exhibitors, sampling their delicious creations. Chefs from across Ontario, Quebec and upper New York state attend. They cook on open fires, build BBQ's, whatever their imagination wants to create, to cook their delicious foods on. Feast has a number of celebrity chefs that return every year, such as Michael Smith, Emerie Brine, Brad Long and others.
There is a market, where fresh produce can be sampled and purchased, along with teas, coffees, spices, chocolate, cheeses, and much more, all organic.
Guests are given a wine glass and napkin when they arrive and a gift bag, which contains the Feast of Fields cookbook, samples, Nimbus water, magazines and coupons and a special gift from one of our sponsors. The cookbook is published every year, and contains recipes submitted by all the exhibitors.
Feast of Fields is a non-profit organization that donates to Farm Groups, School programmes, Organic groups and more.
The site where the Feast has been held for two years (Cold Creek Conservation Park) in the township of King, is a teaching centre for school children across York Region and the GTA. It is nature at its best. It gives the children the opportunity to camp, canoe, climb walls, walk a rope, hike, fish and watch the Redtail Hawks fly above. Feast designed and built a Children's Organic Garden on the site, that the kids maintain and eat. We planted vegetables, grapes, herbs, Butterfly gardens, all to teach the children about nature and organic food. They love it, especially the kids from the city. Feast also built a 40'x60' pavilion for the children to do their outdoor studies under. They had a tent that kept blowing down when the winds came up from the valley, so we built them a permanent structure.
Please come and join us for an amazing outdoor culinary experience.

What are the institutional barriers to making non-chemical food systems the mainstream choice? As we acknowledge the 50th anniversary of the publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, a book that is often credited with launching the environmental movement, we are pleased to have Dr. DeMarco from the Rachel Carson Institute. Dr. DeMarco started her career at Yale University in biochemical genetics research and at Boston University School of Medicine in mutation mechanisms. She then moved to energy and the environment working for the government of Connecticut and later regulatory agencies in Alaska. She returned to academia as Associate Dean in Business and Public Policy at the University of Alaska before becoming Executive Director of the Rachel Carson Homestead Association.
